Where to buy the ROG Xbox Ally: live stock updates for the new handheld PC
Microsoft's Xbox handheld is now available at retailers.
Today is the day ROG Xbox Ally X stock finally drops, and I suspect Microsoft's debut gaming handheld will sell fast. Is that partly because pre-orders are already starting to dry up for the flagship model? Mostly, but I'm also just convinced that fans of the console maker will be eyeing up the portable powerhouse now that reviews are live.
I'd highly recommend checking out my full ROG Xbox Ally X review before splashing out $1,000 for the flagship model. However, I can confirm that, while its price tag is slightly horrifying, Asus and Microsoft's device is a strong best gaming handheld contender. That's thanks to its new design that incorporates controller elements to improve comfort, but it's also rocking new Windows 11 optimizations that help the portable feel more console-like.
Not got $1,000 to whack down on a handheld? The good news is that there is a cheaper white non-X model that serves as a Series S-style sibling, and it's easier to find right now. The top-end black "X" edition isn't a wipeout yet, though, and I'll be serving up live updates on where to buy the ROG Xbox Ally X and its more affordable counterpart throughout the launch.

Where to buy the ROG Xbox Ally in the US
Best Buy | From $599.99
Best Buy is leading the charge with ROG Xbox Ally stock in the US right now since it has both in stock. That's pretty great considering Microsoft and Asus are fresh out of their own handheld, so the retailer is worth hitting ASAP.
Microsoft | From $599.99
Stock of the Xbox Ally X has run dry at Microsoft, but it's still got a batch of the cheaper non-X variant. I'd keep an eye on the storefront though for replenishments, especially if other retailers start to sell out.
Asus | From $599.99
Just like at Microsoft, you'll find non-X models at the Asus store, but the Xbox Ally X is currently AWOL. Again, keep an eye out for restocks as a backup, as I suspect retailers will also sell out quick.
Walmart | From $599
Joining Best Buy, you'll find the white ROG Xbox Ally at Walmart, but it feels like the retailer is skipping on the $1,000 X version for now. I'd still keep an eye out in case it pops up at launch, but it could be sign that the store is planning to only carry cheaper stock.
Amazon | From $599.99
In a bit of a recurring trend, Amazon has the vanilla ROG Xbox Ally, but no X models. This could be a sign that the flagship is somewhat of a Best Buy exclusive for now, but I'll be keeping an eye out regardless.
Where to buy ROG Xbox Ally in the UK
Asus | From £499.99
Asus still has ROG Xbox Ally X stock, and while it might last until the handheld goes officially live, I'd grab it sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.
Currys | From £499.99
Currys is holding strong with ROG Xbox Ally stock, but the X version is currently sold out. Restocks could be on the cards, but you'll want to hit Asus first.
Amazon | From £499.99
Just like in the US, Amazon doesn't seem to have any ROG Xbox Ally X models going, but it's well stocked with the cheaper white version. Whether the retail giant will get more units in for the launch remains to be seen, but it could be a white before the return to the store.
Very | From £499 at Very
Very has the base ROG Xbox Ally available for pre-order, but without the X version listed at the moment. That comes with release day delivery to boot.
Microsoft | Check stock
While the US Microsoft store is carrying stock, the UK site seems to be pointing towards retail partners. I'd still check back in if stock is slim, but it is effectively a middle man right now.
How much is the ROG Xbox Ally?
ROG Xbox Ally prices start at $599.99 in the US and £499 in the UK That will get you the base white version with 16GB RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a Ryzen Z2 A chipset, but if you're aiming for the top model with 24GB memory, 1TB Storage, and a far punchier Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU, you'll be looking at $999.99 / £899.99. That's no small price to pay, but the latter black version will stand a better chance of running new games at 1080p 60fps.
When does ROG Xbox Ally stock go live?
Both the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are set to release on October 16, 2025, but the handhelds are already available to pre-order now. If you wait until the launch date, you may struggle to find the portable in stock, but retailers could also replenish supplies on the day.
Live updates
The hunt for Microsoft's first handheld begins!
Hey there!
Phil here - glad you can join me as I keep an eye on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld situation. Stock officially goes live tomorrow, and while the portable is available to pre-order now, I'll be providing you with live updates on availability and stockists.
I have a funny feeling some of you will have held off until the official reviews go live, and now that they're here and glowing, the handheld will likely be even more in demand. I'm hopeful that stock will last out, but I'll be keeping you updated on the situation regardless.
PSA: There are two ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, and they're not equal
Yes, it's confusing, but there are two versions of the ROG Xbox Ally going on sale tomorrow, and there's more than a color difference. The flagship black Xbox Ally X is the model you'll largely be seeing reviews for right now, and it's got specs closer to the Asus ROG Ally X that released last year, paired with a high-end Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU.
The white Xbox Ally, however, is more like the OG Asus ROG Ally, but it's armed with a Ryzen Z2 A chipset that, at least on paper, is more designed to compete with the Steam Deck OLED. Ultimately, you'll be running games at much higher frame rates on the X version, but it's going to cost you $1,000 versus $600.

Should you go direct to Microsoft or swing by Best Buy?
It can be hard settling on which retailer to go with during hardware launches, and quite a few stores have ROG Xbox Ally models in stock. All stores are currently sticking with the same MSRP as Microsoft and Asus, and that may have you wondering why you'd opt for one over the other.
Ultimately, I'd simply go with the retailer you feel comfortable with. Some of you might be hellbent on grabbing an Xbox Ally at Amazon to take advantage of Prime Delivery, while other will be holding out for click and collect at stores like Best Buy or Argos in the UK. If you've got any specific loyalty memberships, it's worth taking those into account too, but your options might not be as plentiful post-launch.
No, that isn't a ROG Xbox Ally for under $400, but you should still consider grabbing Asus' original
I know it sort of looks like the new ROG Xbox Ally, but the original Asus ROG Ally is a bit of different beast. It's similar in some respects, boasting the same 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, and 1080p 120Hz screen, but is packing a last-gen Ryzen Z1 Extreme chipset and lacks the fancy new controller grips.
That might sound like a bad thing, but apart from lacking the right cores for AI shenanigans, the Ryzen Z1E is actually a more powerful chip on paper. It's packing 8 cores and 16 threads, where as the Z2 A wields 4 cores/16 threads. Simply put, you can grab a very similar device right now for under $400 at Best Buy, and honestly? It's probably the best value option right now since it'll also be getting those lovely new Windows 11 optimizations.
The only catch that the model on offer is "open-box", which means it has been returned but is in excellent condition. It'll set you back $649.99 if you buy it new, so that might be a good sway if you aren't fussed about box fresh stuff.
Asus ROG Ally Z1E (2023) | $649.99 $376.99 - $399.99 at Best Buy
What about last year's Asus ROG Ally X?
Oh dear, these naming conventions are migraine-inducing.
Yes, we did get a premium handheld called the Asus ROG Ally X last year, back when a Microsoft collab was still a pipedream. It's likely going to confuse lots of people looking for the new handheld since it uses almost the same name.
However, it's actually discontinued at Best Buy, as I'm only seeing open box options now available. Personally, I'd steer clear of them since models in excellent condition come in at $854.99, but you'll be getting last-gen performance since it wields a Ryzen Z1E chipset. Plus, it's missing those nifty new controller grips, and those really make the new Xbox handheld something special.
Asus ROG Ally X (2024) | from $800.99 at Best Buy
A quick pre-order stock check
I've had a nosey at every retailer with ROG Xbox Ally pre-order stock, and there are no dramatic changes do far. The TL;DR is that the base white model is easier to get hold of across the board, whereas the X version is still available at Best Buy.
That's hardly surprising considering the ROG Xbox Ally X costs a grand, and honestly? I can't see many console fans spontaneously deciding to grab one. At the same time, $600 is still a lot for a handheld that, at least on paper, will provide the same performance punch as the Steam Deck.
Nevertheless, there will be players hellbent on grabbing the handheld, and for that reason, stock will likely dry up at some point.
US:
ROG Xbox Ally | $599.99 at Best Buy
ROG Xbox Ally X | $999.99 at Best Buy
UK:
ROG Xbox Ally | £599.99 at Argos
ROG Xbox Ally X | £799.99 at Asus
Should you spend a grand on *any* handheld?
I'd be lying if I said I didn't find the ROG Xbox Ally X's price tag deeply upsetting. Sure, tech is getting more expensive, and Microsoft's flagship handheld pulls some big moves, but paying $1,000 for what will be a secondary platform for most players sounds bananas.
I do think the ROG Xbox Ally X is an excellent handheld gaming PC. I also think it does a fantastic job of adding console vibes to something that's technically a tiny rig. But, choosing between this portable powerhouse and something like a Steam Deck is starting to feel like the choice between a Ferrari and a modest city car. They're technically both doing the same thing, but you'll get to drive for groceries at an inappropriate speed.
Silly analogies aside, the ROG Xbox Ally X is for premium players, and while I suspect it'll carve its own space within the scene, I'm hopeful $1,000 handhelds won't become the norm. Look, all I'm saying is that now would be a funny time for Valve to drop an impressive Steam Deck sequel.
Here's an Xbox ROG Ally accessories checklist
If ytou've already got a ROG Xbox Ally pre-order in the bag, you'll want to start picking up accessories. Yes, I know it's a pain and can be boring, but grabbing cases and other add-ons before the handheld arrives will save you a headache down the road.
- CoBak Large Capacity Carrying |
$29.99$26.99 at Amazon - JSAUX Screen Protector 2-Pack |
$12.99$9.99 at Amazon - Baseus 6-in-1 Docking Station |
$39.99£35.98 at Amazon
The only real luxury on the above checklist is my best Steam Deck dock pick, and I've included it because, for under $40, the Baseus 6-in-1 is going to transform the handheld into a hybrid console. It also sometimes does a vanishing act at Amazon, so it's best to grab it while it's currently present.
Who is the ROG Xbox Ally X even for?
The short answer? The ROG Xbox Ally X is for players who fuss over frame rates.
Admittedly, that's not the full picture, as Microsoft's debut handheld also adds console elements into something that is basically a tiny PC. The ROG Ally's ergonomic design brings a controller level of comfort to a scene that's dominated by clunkier alternatives, even though it's heavier than many of its rivals.
It's also pretty quiet for a handheld PC, and if you've ever tried to run a new release on the Steam Deck, you'll know why that's a biggie. SO, when you pair those perks with the fact it'll boost fps further than many alternatives out there right now, it starts to almost justify its absurd price tag.
What is $1,000 getting you with the ROG Xbox Ally X? A glimpse into the future of handheld gaming, I guess.
Asus looks like it will have stock, but it wouldn't be my first choice
Asus itself was offering Xbox ROG Ally pre-orders straight from the off, but the ROG Ally X dropped out particularly quickly here. It seems the brand itself seems to have a smaller allocation than Best Buy (which is still in stock at the time of writing).
Amazon's elusive Ally landing page has emerged
But there's still nothing for the ROG Xbox Ally X.
Amazon really is a tricky one. It often only posts its landing pages in cryptic streams - you have to work to find this handheld listed on the site, it won't simply appear in a search page for a while yet. Still, if you're looking to camp on stock at this retailer you'll want to keep this currently unavailable listing handy.
Stock is still holding out as we head into launch day
ROG Xbox Ally pre-orders are still alive and kicking as we head to launch day, so if you were waiting for reviews to go live before jumping in there's plenty of space to snag yourself an early order.
Microsoft, Best Buy, Walmart, and Asus all have the base Xbox Ally in stock, with the ROG Xbox Ally X still available at Best Buy and Asus.
Over in the UK, availability is looking strong at Microsoft, Argos, Asus, and Amazon as well.
PSA: You're too late for release day pickup at Best Buy
It was a long shot, but I've just been down the delivery timing rabbit hole and thought of Best Buy's popular release day pickup process. If you pre-ordered your handheld earlier in the month you would have had a shot at collecting it tomorrow, but pickup options are now unavailable for both the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X here.
If you're after the cheaper device you've got some better news. These less-popular models are ready to ship on release day, so at least you won't be waiting quite as long as the X-ers among us. The more expensive model ships by December 12.
The new Xbox handhelds arrive today!
Hey there!
Launch day has arrived, and I'm back with you on the ground hunting for ROG Xbox Ally stock. While pre-orders were available at Best Buy, the retailer seems to have switched to "coming soon" mode. That's code for if you want a day one unit, you'll have to keep your eyes peeled for the portable powerhouse popping back up.
If you're looking for the $600 ROG Xbox Ally, though, you can actually still pre-order one right now at Microsoft. Despite its price, the Series S-inspired tier seems to be less in demand, likely because it's rocking a chipset that's closer in power to a Steam Deck than the punchiest portable powerhouses out there right now.
Anyway, stick with me if you want to grab the ROG Xbox Ally X later today, as I've been doing this sort of thing for years. I'll also be answering some of your burning questions about the handheld, just in case you're somewhat on the fence (I don't blame you, a grand is a lot)
ROG Xbox Ally | $599.99 at Microsoft
Where *not* to buy the ROG Xbox Ally today
I'm not saying you shouldn't be open to options when hunting for a ROG Xbox Ally handheld today, but I'm already seeing some bananas listings at marketplaces. Shout out to the grifters at eBay who want $1,500 for the flagship portable, and I suspect we'll see a few more inflated listings via third-party sellers.
The bottom line is don't go to marketplaces and pay over $1,000 for the ROG Xbox Ally X. I love the handheld, but I'm struggling to recommend paying a grand for it never mind over and above that. Yes, I know the intense feeling of FOMO can make you do silly things, but trust me when I say you'll get one for the right price or potentially even less if you're patient.
If you're all about indie adventures, the white ROG Xbox Ally is worth considering
I feel like I've been shouting about how the cheapest ROG Xbox Ally model is both too expensive for my liking and packs a weaker Ryzen chipset than Asus' original handheld. But, it's worth stressing that it could be the right device for players planning on sticking to older releases and indie adventures, especially if you want some more comfortable than previously released portables.
Yes, the Ryzen Z2 A will struggle to boost fps to the same level as its Ryzen Z1 Extreme predecessor and the new Ryzen Z2 Extreme. At least, the former will be the case if you don't leverage AMD's added AI abilities, as the new chip can make use of tools like Fluid Motion Frames and Microsoft's upcoming Auto Super Resolution feature. Both of those features will help increase frames in a pitch, and while your mileage will vary in terms of fidelity, it could still provide a noticeably better experience.
That said, if you're not fussed about the comfy new controller grips or even having Windows 11 optimization out of the box, try to grab the OG Asus ROG Ally for cheap. There aren't any deals worth considering right now, as yesterday's under $400 open box units got snapped up at Best Buy, but it should fall back down in price as we approach Black Friday.

How long will it take to get your ROG Xbox Ally?
One thing that's easy to forget during launches is shipping times. While you'd assume every retailer is planning to fulfil orders ASAP, it's worth checking whether the ROG Xbox Ally you're buying will arrive within a reasonable amount of time.
I've had a peek at expected shipping times for retailers carrying the ROG Xbox Ally right now, and Asus claims it'll process your order within 24 hours. Stock is dwindling everywhere else right now, but I will let you know Best Buy and other retailer's expectations once they're live on page.
Asus is the last store standing right now
A quick stock check update - Asus is the only retailer at this moment with ROG Xbox Ally stock in both the US. There are a few UK retailers still holding onto the cheaper model, like Very and Currys, but I'm already seeing cracks in the supply since Argos is fresh out of pre-order units.
I suspect we'll see stock replenished fairly quickly, at least when it comes to the base ROG Xbox Ally. Whether the X model will become an issue remains to be seen, as its high MSRP means retailers may be hesitant to order a huge supply just in case demand drops dramatically.
If the ROG Xbox Ally X is one of the most expensive handhelds, what's the cheapest?
I'll be shocked and horrified if many of you have a spare $1,000 to whack down on a ROG Ally X. I mean, I struggled to justify buying a Switch 2 back in June, so spending a grand on what is effectively a low-spec gaming PC is painful. However, there are still "affordable" alternatives out there, especially if you aren't looking for exceptional frame rates in new releases.
For starters, the Steam Deck LCD is still a thing for $399, and if you're lucky, you can even grab a certified refurbished version of the oldest 64GB model for under $300. If you're looking for full Windows 11 versatility, though, you'll want to eye up options like the NEXT Lite 7-inch for $399.99 at Best Buy.
That latter portable PC isn't going to remotely wow you with frame rates, and it's really just a lightweight way to run some PC games on the go. However, that might be all you need if you're only looking to play indie romps or something from the 2010s at 720p.
Asus is fresh out of ROG Xbox Ally X stock
Okay, I think it's safe to say ROG Xbox Ally X pre-order stock is done and dusted in the US. That means we're now waiting on the like of Best Buy switching from "coming soon" to officially in stock mode, so I'll let you know as soon as that actually happens.
The base ROG Xbox Ally is still hanging on at Asus, but those could also sell out as the day progresses. I'll keep you posted on the situation!
Will ROG Xbox Ally Black Friday deals be a thing?
Short answer? Probably not.
The much longer and more helpful response? Well, I highly doubt we'll see an actual price cut on the new Xbox handheld range, and if we do see anything, it'll probably be a sneaky $50 since that previously happened with the Asus ROG Ally X.
The good news is that the very existence of the ROG Xbox Ally range means the OG Asus handhelds are primed for a price cut. I do admittedly fear that those reductions will end up being a clearance tactic, ultimately leading to the discontinuation of those cheaper models. But, you should be able to grab the Z1E ROG Ally for around $400, and while the X version is already MIA at Best Buy, it should fall significantly too, where available.
Now we play the waiting game
Not much change to the ROG Xbox Ally X stock situation right now, as I'm really now just waiting on Best Buy lifting the lid on launch day units. The "coming soon" button implies it will indeed have a specific batch of day one handhelds, but I'm unsure how long supplies will actually hold out.
Microsoft likes to say everything is an Xbox these days, and that includes other handheld PCs
In a way, Microsoft is its own worst enemy within the handheld gaming PC ring. While you'd think it'd want its ROG Xbox Ally X to emerge as the top contender, it's actively giving its rivals a hand by bringing its new Full Screen Experience to other portables. Effectively, devices like the Lenovo Legion Go S and the monstrously expensive MSI Claw 8 AI+ are also going to end up with the same Console-style functionality, and there are already Game Bar elements included with both.
Therefore, if you're not too keen on the design of the new ROG Xbox Ally range, but hate the idea of fumbling around the Windows desktop on a handheld, you've absolutely got options. Until we get a dedicated console that's like a portable version of the Series S, there is no singular Xbox handheld.

Psst, I think that Asus ROG Xbox Ally X accessories giveaway is expired
Asus was running a raffle for pre-order customers that included an accessories bundle. However, I've just noticed it says you have to order before "10/11", and since winners will be drawn during a ROG Pulse livestream today, I'm assuming it's now too late.
Just worth pointing out in case you're tempted to order via Asus for that reason!
ROG Xbox Ally | $599.99 at Asus
ROG Xbox Ally X availability is slim in the UK right now
Technically speaking, Currys should have ROG Xbox Ally X stock in the UK, but the listing is AWOL right now. That means the only place you can grab it is directly from Asus, which isn't ideal if you're looking to take advantage of retailer click and collect services.
I do recall Asus ROG Ally X availability being a bit weird in the UK at launch last year, so there's a good chance retailers will eventually sort out their listings. If it's the white £500 model you're after, though, you'll be pleased to know that all the usual suspects are well stocked.

Is the ROG Xbox Ally actually an Xbox?
It's easy to take knowledge about handheld gaming PCs for granted, but I'm willing to bet there are some console fans out there confused about the new Xbox Ally.
So, let's set the record straight - the ROG Xbox Ally isn't an Xbox.
Yes, it has "Xbox" in its name, and it has access to console-inspired features via a Windows 11 app. But, it's innards are pretty different to your Series S/X, and that means you won't be downloading the same versions of games you should for your cuboid.
Instead, you'll be playing PC games, and that means it's up to you to tweak resolution and visual settings to ensure everything runs smoothly. On a console, the optimization largely left in the hands of developers, who ultimately end up locking their releases to specific pre-sets to prevent any hiccups.
Therefore, if you play games on a console partly because you don't want performance thought taking up any brain space, the ROG Xbox Ally isn't going to cut it. If you're looking for a souped up alternative to the Steam Deck with Xbox-inspired elements, though, it could be exactly what you're looking for.
Hoping to grab a cheaper handheld than the ROG Xbox Ally? Uh, I have bad news
Best Buy normally likes to chop something off its handheld gaming PC range, but everything seems to be full price right now. Is that so that other price cuts don't rain on the ROG Xbox Ally's launch day parade? Probably, but it does mean you're looking at over $600 for most of the portable rigs worth buying right now.

Availability update
I've just run through another stock check. ROG Xbox Ally stock is still looking healthy in the US and UK, with units available at Asus, Walmart, and Microsoft in the former and Amazon, Currys, Very, and Argos across the pond.
Things are a little more challenging for the main model, though. The ROG Xbox Ally X is currently only available at Asus in the UK, with no stock available in the US.
Asus's delivery dates are looking pretty late in the UK
While ROG Xbox Ally X stock is still looking pretty limited in the US, the UK has one beacon of hope alight. Asus has the top-end handheld on the shelves still, outlasting pretty much every other retailer on the web. There's just one hitch.
This stock is estimated to be delivered in mid December at the time of writing. Hey, that's not too bad if you're grabbing the handheld as a gift for one very lucky player. If it's yourself you're treating, though, you'll just have to wait for the holidays.
Some early reports of delayed pre-orders coming in
Those lucky enough to be able to pre-order the ROG Xbox Ally X should be receiving their handhelds today, but I've spotted some reports of delayed orders reportedly stretching back to December. It seems odd to launch with no stock, but according to Reddit user u/therealalicejane in the r/xbox sub first-day pre-orders are being pushed to the end of the year.
Others have also reported their pre-orders being pushed back earlier in the week, like u/raythepanny.
That said, many are still reporting their shipments to be on time. Obviously, this is all individuals from Reddit, so it's no concrete fact - if you've had your ROG Xbox Ally X pre-order delayed we'd love to hear from you.
Best Buy ROG Xbox Ally X stock just went live
Now that the Xbox ROG Ally X has officially launched, Best Buy now has the handheld sitting pretty on virtual shelves. The portable PC should arrive at your door by Saturday if you order now, but stores seemingly won't be carrying any units until November if the click and collect button is anything to go by.

ROG Xbox Ally stock just hit Antonline
Our options are ramping up, as Antonline now has ROG Xbox Ally stock live. Just the white version for now, mind you, so if you're looking for the more powerful X model, you'll want to stick with Best Buy.

You can click and collect the white ROG Xbox Ally at Best Buy
Small update for people who like to venture outside - you can send the base ROG Xbox Ally to Best Buy for collection. While the click and collect service is suggesting the Black X version won't reach stores until November, you'll be able to pick up the white portable from this Tuesday.

No sign of the ROG Xbox Ally at Amazon yet
These days, Amazon seems to really drag its heels during big launches. I figured maybe it'd end up with some ROG Xbox Ally stock during launch day, but there's still no sign of the portable at the retailer. Yes, I know it doesn't matter right now since it's at Best Buy and Antonline. However, I personally have friends that prefer to use Prime for big purchases, so I get why some of you might be waiting for the online giant to get in on the action.
Stock is looking pretty healthy, but only a few retailers are carrying the Xbox Ally X
Allow me to put on my surprised face.
I'm not seeing any out-of-stock signs for the ROG Xbox Ally duo. You could say that's unusual for a launch with a big console name attached, but price is evidently playing a role here. While there are stores without stock, it's worth highlighting that they didn't list any launch day units to begin with, so it's not a case of the handheld being snapped up fast.
I suspect the Xbox Ally X will be the first to temporarily vanish, and that will simply be the result of it only being at Best Buy and Antonline. I'd be highly surprised if the non-X version sells out, though, as it's been consistently available to reserve well before today.

You can get the ROG Xbox Ally for less in the UK if you're an AO member
Before you get the wrong idea, this isn't a ROG Xbox Ally deal. Instead, it's a chance for anyone with an AO membership in the UK to grab £25 off the handheld. Keep in mind that becoming a member will set you back £40 a year, but if you've already got an account and are planning on picking up the portable, logging in is a no-brainer.
ROG Xbox Ally | £499 £474 with AO Membership
Walmart is out of Xbox Ally stock
Looks like Walmart is the first retailer to put up its out of stock signs for the white Xbox Ally stock. It has yet to list the X mode, and it might avoid it entirely purely due to its price, it also feels like either demand was high at the retailer, or it didn't have that may units to begin with. I suspect it's the latter, but I'll keep watch in case it returns.
The ROG Xbox Ally doesn't have a PlayStation rival (yet), but there is a $150 alternative
I'm not for a second trying to say the PlayStaton Portal can compete with the ROG Xbox Ally in terms of performance. Sony's handheld is more of a remote player than a proper portable console, but if you do have a PS Plus subscription or a PS5 along with a solid internet connection, you could end up with a similar experience in your hands for under $150.
That's thanks to open box options at Best Buy that are currently $149.99, which is a nice price even if the Portal does rely on either a PS5 or Sony's cloud servers. If you're a faithful PlayStation fan, this is your most portable option right now (unless you're like me and are still rocking a PSP).
PlayStation Portal (open box) | $199.99 $149.99 at Best Buy
Key takeaways from the ROG Xbox Ally launch
We're a chunk of the way through the ROG Xbox Ally launch day, and I have thoughts.
The first is that, at least right now, the Xbox handheld isn't hard to get hold of. That should make any inflated listings at marketplaces look very silly, but at the same time, Microsoft's MSRP is arguably out of reach for most players.
That in itself makes this portable a bit of a niche that caters to handheld players looking for a taste of what's to come, rather than a proper rival to the Steam Deck. It's a lavish gadget that I still think deserves plenty of praise, but the $1,000 X model isn't going to resonate with regular Xbox fans.
The cheaper white model is also in a pickle, as while its new design is appealing, it's not going to be pulling any big performance tricks. In truth, we're a bit too close to Black Friday to be splashing out $600 on a handheld that is comparable to one that'll end up $400 during the sales, and all that is resulting in what has been a relatively tame launch for the ROG Xbox Ally range.
